Seasons Holidays Forest Hills: Trips to Africa
Fancy a day trip to Africa? For those intrepid travellers amongst us staying at Forest Hills, why not think about enjoying the day in Tangiers in Morocco?
Easier to get there than you would imagine from Forest Hills. One hour’s drive down to the beautiful town of Tarifa (the southernmost tip of Spain). A quick ferry trip over the Strait of Gibraltar and you are met by the one and only Said Nacir, our favoured guide for the day.
Said is a font of information with an expansive knowledge of the History of Tangiers dating back to prehistoric times. Legends such as Hercules’s foot print separating Africa from Europe are explained and seen outside of the vast and ever-growing City. With nearly one million inhabitants, Tangiers is built on seven hills, has vast beaches stretching for miles and is one of the busiest ports in North Africa. Said takes you up, down and through some of the most interesting streets, into the Kasbah where you find villas of the rich and famous, and the Medina to see the labyrinth of shops and markets which have not changed in hundreds of years.
It’s striking how tradition, culture and religion have remained within the city walls without the need or want for westernisation. With a good guide like Said, you feel completely safe and you are guaranteed to learn not only about Tangiers but the history of Morocco. The day is punctuated by an authentic Moroccan meal accompanied with live music. The restaurant is a beautiful spot with friendly people and a chance to really relax whilst trying the cuisine.
The most refreshing aspect of Tangiers is the lack of mass-made goods and supermarkets. The quality of workmanship remains extremely high with skills being passed down from generation to generation. It really is like stepping back in time to a romantic era worlds away from the western way of life. Famous visitors and fans of Tangiers include Sir Winston Churchill, Rita Hayworth, Rock Hudson and Tennessee Williams.
The day trip with Said costs around 83 euros all inclusive from Tarifa. He also offers extended trips for two to three days going further into the Rif Mountains visiting places like Fes and Casablanca. Forest Hills reception can facilitate your visit direct.
