Overview There’s something about Southern Ireland, which makes you feel calm as soon as you arrive. The everlasting tranquility and splendor of Knocktopher Abbey will certainly help soothe even the most stressed guest. The Abbey is situated near the tranquil village of Knocktopher, between Kilkenny and Waterford, on the site of a 13th century Abbey. Parts of the original building are incorporated in the present one, which has been converted to individual suites some with four poster beds. There are also traditional cottages, converted from coach houses and stables. The 17-acre estate and surrounding countryside provide opportunities for walking, fishing and golf. The resort consists of eight self-catering suites within the abbey itself, complete with genuine antiques, plus the adjacent coach house and stables have been converted into two-bedroom cottages. Amenities include a full-size snooker table, tennis court, and lounge. The Resort The history of Knocktopher Abbey is fascinating: set in 17 acres of mature grounds and parkland, it was once the place of a Norman castle, and you can still see the keep today. In the 13th century, the Abbey was the quarters of the first Carmelite order in Ireland, and continued to be, until Cromwell took over the building in 1647. Still standing today after five centuries is the oldest working chimney in Ireland. One of the country’s only three Holy Trinity Wells is located in the main Abbey building, in an original 13th Century vaulted room. The house itself was residence to the Langrishe family, the Lords of Ballyhale for three centuries. The present Abbey was restored in Gothic style in 1850, after a disastrous fire burnt the Abbey down. Knocktopher continued the family seat from 1679 until 1981, when it was painstakingly renovated to provide eight spacious self-catering suites, each with its own exclusive character, | leather Chesterfields and antique desks – some even have four poster beds. A chance to experience all the sophistication and grandeur of the past.
Accommodation The Mews Cottages The neighbouring coach house and stables have been stylishly converted into seven one and two bedroom cottages, and as with all Seasons resorts they are furnished with every requirement for self-catering, including linen, towels, crockery, cutlery, glassware, cookware, fully fitted kitchens and appliances. Television, VCR/DVD player with video library, double glazing and heating add to your comfort. The Courtyard Complex There are also plans to renovate additional Abbey farm buildings into luxury apartments, in a courtyard style. The Area Set in the countryside between Kilkenny and Waterford you’re just a short journey away from two fine cities, which offer plenty of Irish charm. County Kilkenny is located in the southeast of Ireland. A large number of Norman castles and abbeys make Kilkenny one of Ireland's most historic counties. Modern Kilkenny boasts a vibrant nightlife, particularly in Kilkenny City, and a rich array of arts and crafts. The river visitor attractions include Kilkenny Castle, Jerpoint Abbey, Dunmore Cave, Saint Canice's Cathedral, and Duiske Abbey. Waterford, "the crystal county", a natural playground for Golf, Equestrian, Walking, Angling, Water Sports and Cycling, Waterford offers the complete holiday experience. The county offers a dazzling coastline, beautiful river valleys and two dramatic ranges of very accessible mountains. Waterford City was established in Viking times and it has an exciting medieval flavour and riverside bustle. In 2005 the City was host to the Tall Ships Race. The City is the home of Waterford Crystal, a lifestyle product of exquisite craftsmanship. |
